The Danger of Hammertoes

Danger of HammertoesWhen you think about hammertoes you may think them odd or unattractive, but did you know that there are more serious issues that can occur to your foot health if you don’t seek treatment from your Commerce Township, MI podiatrist Dr. Shanahan, Dr. Popofski and Dr. Jennifer Petronella.

What are hammertoes?

When a muscular or ligament imbalance occurs around the joint of the toe it can cause the middle toe joint to bend or get stuck in one position. Toes, particularly the baby toe, may even curl under.

There are two types of hammertoes: flexible and rigid. Flexible hammertoes can still be moved at the toe’s joint and are a milder form of this condition. Flexible hammertoes have many treatment options to prevent progression.

Rigid hammertoes, on the other hand, have caused the toe to become stiff. The joint is usually out of alignment and the toe cannot move. By the time a hammertoe has become this serious surgery is usually necessary.

What are the causes?

As you may already know, muscles all work together and when the muscles get off balance a hammertoe can occur. Muscles get out of whack either by injury (stop wearing those poorly fitted shoes that crush your toes!), genetics (that’s right; you can inherit your hammertoe!) or arthritis.

Why are hammertoes bad for my foot health?

One of the biggest issues people with hammertoes have is that the toe may rub and become irritated when in shoes. Foot pain, particularly in shoes, is fairly common for people with hammertoes.

Hammertoes can also be a serious issue for those with bad circulation or diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with either of these conditions then you need to see your foot doctor in Commerce Township for immediate care.

Even if you don’t have any of these medical conditions it’s still important to seek treatment. Why? Because if left untreated, hammertoes can also cause the surrounding toes to become deformed, which limits your mobility and can cause severe pain. Furthermore, untreated hammertoes can also form calluses, corns and open sores, if infected. Before this happens to you, get the treatment and care you need to prevent your hammertoe from getting worse.
