Advanced Non-Surgical Techniques

Medical science and treatment technology are constantly changing, adapting, and improving. New research. New treatment technologies. More sophisticated procedures with higher success rates.

Even for a doctor, keeping up with all the new developments can be exhausting! But it’s necessary if you want to be able to offer your patients the highest caliber evidence-based care available.

At Lakes Foot and Ankle Associates, we’ve made a commitment to investing in advanced diagnostic and treatment technology—far beyond the scope of what you’d normally find in a typical “chip and clip” podiatry clinic.

It’s all part of our “circle of care” philosophy—in other words, surrounding you with everything you could possibly need to diagnose and treat your foot or ankle pathology, so you can get back to living your best.

Some of the technology we offer includes:

Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails, Warts, and Scars

Our office uses the Cutera GenesisPlus laser system for fungal toenail treatments, as well as scar management and wart treatment. This is the most effective system available for management of fungal nails, and offers significant improvement over both oral and topical antifungal medication-based treatments.

Laser energy is able to pass through the nail to target the infection underneath, killing the fungi without causing collateral damage to healthy cells.

Unlike oral antifungals, laser treatment has no known side effects. And while topical medications can take a year or more to work, laser treatment accelerates the process and often produces effective results after just a handful of brief treatment sessions.

MLS® Laser Therapy

It’s hard to overstate just how much MLS laser therapy has revolutionized the way that we can care for our patients—especially those with chronic pain or in surgical recovery. But what is it, exactly?

First, recall that a laser is a focused beam of light, and light is (among other things) a form of energy. And your cells require energy to fight inflammation, take on nutrients faster, repair damaged tissue, etc.

The MLS laser system, which has been cleared by the FDA and rigorously tested by institutes (including Harvard University), uses a pair of lasers at specific wavelengths to stimulate cellular activity. Essentially, the cells can absorb and use the light energy in extremely beneficial ways, including:

  • Rapid pain relief
  • Rapid anti-inflammatory and anti-edema effects
  • Increased formation of new capillaries for improved circulation and vascular activity
  • Accelerated cellular growth, which aids in repair of damaged tissues
  • Faster wound healing
  • Improved nerve function
  • Improved immune system function

For patients with musculoskeletal pain, MLS laser therapy can often reduce or eliminate their symptoms after just a couple of brief treatment sessions—even if they’ve been suffering for years. The effects are cumulative and can be long-lasting, as well.

For patients who do need surgery, MLS laser can significantly reduce their discomfort and accelerate healing of the wound site after their procedure.

We’ve even seen some incredible results using the MLS laser to treat patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and tarsal tunnel syndrome. In some cases it’s been able to restore some measure of feeling and balance to patients who have suffered for 10 years or more, even when other treatments have failed.

And there’s more good news.

  • Brief sessions—usually less than 15 minutes per session
  • Convenient treatment course— 2-3 sessions per week, 6-12 sessions total for most conditions
  • Totally painless procedure—no analgesia or medication required
  • No known side effects

Diagnostic Technology

In order to aid in accurate diagnosis of foot and ankle pathologies, our office is equipped with advanced diagnostic technology. This includes:

  • Digital X-ray system. No need to go to the hospital or lab. We can provide on-site X-rays. Because the system is digital, we can get clear pictures and view and use them immediately. There’s also less need for re-takes, limiting your radiation exposure.
  • Diagnostic podiatry ultrasound. Ultrasound allows real-time monitoring and evaluation of various pathologies—particularly soft tissue conditions that won’t show up as well on an X-ray. We also often use the ultrasound to provide precision guidance for injections, making them safer and more effective.
